How Gardening Can Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Having an organic veggie garden can save 68lbs of CO2 a year! Organic also means not using fertilizers THAT can hurt our animals, which help our plants and food grow. each bag of nitrogen based fertilizer takes so much energy to produce and ship, it creates 4-8lbs of CO2 per ton.

The best part of growing your own garden? Nurturing a garden can give you a new appreciation for food... especially for kids. My son loves veggies, and I think part of it is because we are in the garden together every day. If you want higher yields, try an edible garden, which has both flowers, herbs, and veggies in it. You could even just plant a row of wildflowers... the goal is to increase pollination! Another great thing for your garden is compost, which is free. You just need an outdoor compost bin. The only trick is saving piles of "brown material," which is dried leaves, unseeded dried out plants and weeds, sticks, and even dryer lint to continually add to your "green material." A simple web search will help make it feel easy!

Growing up as a contractor's daughter, I was immersed in the world of construction and renovation from day one. While other kids were playing house with dolls, I was learning about foundation repair, watching walls come down, and seeing spaces transform from the ground up. Those early experiences taught me to see beyond what exists and envision what could be—a skill that would prove invaluable in my real estate career.
