Why I Got Into Green Real Estate

People are often curious how I got into green real estate. It started with my sons cas diagnosis. Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a speech disorder in which a child’s brain has difficulty coordinating the complex oral movements needed to create sounds into syllables, syllables into words, and words into phrases. Here is that story:

I was working as a Tennis Professional when River was born. At 18 months, he was diagnosed with CAS (Childhood Apraxia of Speech) and I was told there would most likely be other components aside from speech that would come into focus.

I immediately quit my job since babysitters and nannies would never be able to help him the way he needed. We were in private speech 5x a week until we got approved for State services when River was 2.

I started working with him throughout the day in short increments. When we hit the biggest goal- getting him to speak/ label objects, I took a big exhale.

At this point, I knew it was time to get back to me and my career. My son's determination, our whole family really, made me feel like I could succeed at whatever I wanted to do.

I immediately knew I wanted to take the Green Real Estate avenue.

I had become very involved with my communities and started having friends who had sustainability goals ask me to come look at this house they wanted to buy, would it fit with their goals?

I had thought about both sustainable consulting and real estate based on my background, but my son gave me the space and determination to do both together.

I don't know if I would have had the courage to start a new career, especially one based in sustainable real estate because it is so hard to come by, if it wasn't for my son.

I feel like I have come full circle and this is where I am supposed to be.

There's a specific kind of buyer who ends up in my DMs asking about North Salem. They want acreage. They want room for horses. And they are absolutely not willing to trade convenience for it. The good news? They don't have to.

Going green does not have to mean overhauling your entire lifestyle. One of the most impactful and accessible sustainability habits is also one of the most overlooked: shopping local. And if you live in Westchester, you have every reason to try!
